Cue Abstraction and Exemplars in Multiple-Cue Judgment

چکیده
Although categorization and multiple-cue judgment are similar tasks, categorization models emphasize exemplar memory, while multiple cue judgment routinely is interpreted in terms of mental integration of cue weights that are abstracted in training. We investigate if these conclusions derive from genuine differences in the processes in the two tasks or are accidental to different research methods. The results reveal large individual differences and a shift from exemplar memory to mental cueabstraction when the criterion is changed from classification to continuous. This suggests that people switch between qualitatively distinct processes in the two tasks.

Representational Shifts in a Multiple-Cue Judgment Task with Continuous Cues
Research on multiple cue judgment with continuous cues and a continuous criterion has been dominated by statistical modeling of the cue utilization with linear multiple regression. In this study we apply two cognitive process models to investigate the relative contributions of explicit abstraction of the cue-criterion relations and memory for concrete exemplars in a multiple-cue judgment task. ...
متن کاملAdaptive changes between cue abstraction and exemplar memory in a multiple-cue judgment task with continuous cues.
The majority of previous studies on multiple-cue judgment with continuous cues have involved comparisons between judgments and multiple linear regression models that integrated cues into a judgment. The authors present an experiment indicating that in a judgment task with additive combination of multiple continuous cues, people indeed displayed abstract knowledge of the cue criterion relations ...
متن کاملProcess and representation in Multiple - Cue judgment
This thesis investigates the cognitive processes and representations underlying human judgment in a multiple-cue judgment task. Several recent models assume that people have several qualitatively distinct and competing levels of knowledge representations (Ashby, The most successful cognitive models in categorization and multiple-cue judgment are, respectively, exemplar-based models and rule-bas...
متن کاملA Matter of Process Accuracy: Observing or Inferring the Criterion of Few or Many Exemplars
Can we tailor fit the training to enhance judgment accuracy by changing to the learning format that invites the most effective cognitive process for the task environment at hand? The results from a study on multiple-cue judgments revealed that observing the cues and the criterion of exemplars simultaneously with no feedback involved in the training, a learning format predicted to invite exempla...
متن کاملDo children profit from looking beyond looks? From similarity-based to cue abstraction processes in multiple-cue judgment.
The authors investigated the ability of 9- to 11-year-olds and of adults to use similarity-based and rule-based processes as a function of task characteristics in a task that can be considered either a categorization task or a multiple-cue judgment task, depending on the nature of the criterion (binary vs. continuous). Both children and adults relied on similarity-based processes in the categor...
